Visit Edam, Volendam and Marken in one day starting from Amsterdam

Are you planning a trip to the beautiful Amsterdam? Why not dedicate a day to visit around the city, discovering the more traditional beauties of Holland? In the area of Waterland you will find the typical green wooden houses of the fishermen, huge expanses of green lawns with lots of animals and especially an oasis of peace and relaxation. Here are some tips to reach the main villages by public transport, starting from Amsterdam. You can reach the wonderful towns of Edam, Volendam and Marken in one day.

Waterland

To visit the beauties of the area of Waterland you can go to Amsterdam Central Station to catch the 312, 314 or 316 buses, which will lead you to Edam, a typical Dutch village, famous for its fantastic cheese. To get it, you have to enter from the main entrance of Amsterdam Central Station, and then go to the back, following the signs. Go to the stop marked by the letter G, where you will have to wait for the bus. By this one, you can also reach the delightful towns of Volendam and Marken.

Edam

The ticket to visit the entire region of the Waterland allows unlimited travel for the whole day. You can purchase it directly contacting the bus driver. Remember to stamp it every time you go up and down, in order to avoid unnecessary fines as in the Nordic countries the controls are very frequent! After about forty minutes of travel, you will reach the quiet town of Edam and you can enjoy a nice walk to the village. You do not need a map if you have a good sense of direction so keep moving.

Volendam

Volendam

The next step is to reach Volendam, starting from Edam this time. Always with the 312, 314 or 316 bus, in fifteen minutes, you can reach this charming village, which has a picturesque harbor and also a strip of beach that is really special, consisting of small pieces of shells. You can’t miss it! Here it is a tradition to eat sandwiches with herring, so you should give it a try. In Volendam, have a beautiful walk in the narrow streets of the village, trying not to lose any of the enchanting views that characterize the town. Do not be afraid to ask the inhabitants of the place for information. They will prove to be very open and always available!

Marken

Marken

Final stop, Marken. An island of ex-fishermen that today has many farmers with sheep. You will love the beautiful harmony between the natural surroundings and the village. This can be reach either by a ferry departing from Volendam, or by the usual bus, going to Broek in Waterland, and this time taking the bus 311 in the opposite direction. The 311 bus is the one you will need to return to the Amsterdam Central Station (the return trip will be about 40 minutes). The ferry trip is surely much more impressive, which will allow you to taste even better the atmosphere of these beautiful fishing villages.
