Tuscany | The green heart of Italy

Tuscany is one of Italy’s most beautiful places to travel to and discover.  Vineyards and low hills , medieval castles, quiet villages and farmhouses among cypresses, olive trees , wheat, and sunflowers. This magical picture constructs the green “heart” of Italy, which lies north of Rome and south of Milan, enjoying the Tyrrhenian Sea west and the Apennine Mountains north and east and is thus one of the most popular European travel destinations.

Do not be deceived by its size on the map, one week is enough to know only a few of the villages and its beauty as the roads are provincial and driving along is not always easy. In the west, indeed, Tuscany has coastal tracks around the area of Orbetello, while the northern ones reach Pisa. Before you indulge into the lure of the mainland of Tuscany (the essence of travel is in the countryside and villages) , a pass from the picturesque medieval city of Siena is a must and have to see . Nest stop is San Gimignano , perhaps the most beautiful village of the area which attracts visitors like a magnet .

The legacy Tuscany carries is evident not only in the architecture left by the Etruscans from the 8th BC century (samples of which are located in of Fiesole, Chiusi and the Volterra) but also by the unique beauty of the Romanesque churches of Pisa, Florence , of Lucca, Pistoia and of Carrara, as well as the gothic elements of the 13th and 14th -century San Gimignano, in Volterra, the Cortona. In the Cortona you will be fascinated by the view and the quiet medieval streets – the same goes with Montepulciano, which stands out because of the unique architecture of its buildings.

Few are those who find their way up to Pienza, a small jewel of the Renaissance, or to Montalcino ( where they make the famous wine Brunello). Discover the most beautiful of the fortified villages of Monteriggioni, only a short distance from Siena. Close to the area, there are three atmospheric abbeys (Sant ‘Antimo, San Galgano, Monte Oliveto Maggiore), monuments of the long monastic tradition of Tuscany. If you have time do not forget to visit the less known, but equally beautiful areas of Mugello, Pratomagno and Casentino: here the landscape is completely different, as it is a mountain with lush forests.
