Baden means ‘bath’ in German, and Baden-Baden is an ancient spa town. Originally a Roman spa, it was subsequently forgotten as a spa town until around 1799 when it was rediscovered.  It became a popular tourist destination during the early nineteenth century and the first casino opened there in 1801. The current Casino Baden-Baden opened in 1838, which makes it the oldest casino in Germany and one of the oldest in the world.

Immensely opulent and adorned with artwork and stunning chandeliers, it inspired Marlene Dietrich, a frequent visitor there, to describe it the world’s most beautiful casino.  It was also the favourite casino of Dostoevsky, a man who was particularly fond of gambling. During one of his stays there he wrote his short novel called the Gambler which is generally thought to be semi-autobiographic. He wrote it at haste as he needed the income to pay off some gambling debts.

The gaming floors, of which there are four, are individually styled and very opulent. The Venetian is also famous for its central canal with bridges and gondolas.
