While you certainly have heard of the Taj Mahal, few people know the existence of the Golden Temple, which was officially renamed in Charmantir Sahib in 2005, even though it is one of the most impressive buildings in the world. The temple is located in the Punjab region of India and is very important for the Sikh religion, who honor him more than anyone else in their temple.

The construction of the church began in 1574 and lasted 25 years, although renovations were made in subsequent centuries. In the 19th century, on the orders of Maharaja Ranjit Singkch, the dome and the marble walls were covered with more than 100 kg of gold, making the church more beautiful than before.

The church needed repair on two occasions after the raid invaders in 1760 and 1984, when the Indian prime minister ordered an attack against the church when Sikh gunmen fled inside. The attack was condemned by all Sikhs in the world and many deaths ensued, with the damage to the temple to be repaired by the Sikh community and not by the central government.

Fortunately, nowadays the temple is a quiet and reverent place and is open to visitors of every religion. In fact, it is one of the best places where you can go if you want to learn more about Sikhism. Upon entering, visitors must wash their feet, cover their heads and take off their shoes. The walls are beautifully decorated and have phrases written on the walls from the holy book of the Sikhs.

The temple is surrounded by the lake Amrit Sarovar or Lake of Nectar, which means that you need to cross the Bridge of Gurus. If you’re hungry, you’re lucky enough so that you are among the 35,000 people who get free food from volunteers in a large dining Sikh Guru Ka Langkar. Still, there are 400 rooms, where pilgrims can rest after the long journey made to the temple. Now that’s hospitality!
