Sporting Holidays 2014 | Brazil Or Russia?

If the anticipation is anything to go by, then 2014 is a much-wanted and long-awaited year for many travellers, not least of all sports fans. With the footballing world focused on Brazil and the Olympics equally anticipated in Russia, 2014 will be a sporting year to remember…

In the depths of winter, many of us are starting to think about what we want to do for their summer holidays 2014, and one event just keeps being cited as a great reason to look for those holiday deals now, especially if you fancy a spot of South American travel. Brazil, as you will doubtless already know, is hosting the FIFA World Cup, which is taking place from the 12th June – the 13th of July next year.

Next year’s World Cup marks the second time that Brazil has hosted the games, the first time being in 1950, making Brazil the fifth country to have hosted the games twice, after Italy, France, Mexico and Germany. Throughout the course of the competition, 32 countries will take part, with Spain attempting to defend its championship, while Bosnia and Herzegovina will make their first appearance in the competition since making the finals.

Of course, you don’t have to be a football fan to travel to Brazil, and you don’t have to go in June or July, because there is always something going on in Brazil, and there is so much to see and do in this huge, beautiful country: miles of long sandy beaches, extensive rainforests, mountain panoramas to name just a few. You could go for a few weeks early in the year to experience the parades and spectacle of Rio de Janeiro Carnival, if you can’t wait until summer!

However, if colder climates are more appealing in February, then the sporting calendar in 2014 also offers a very different destination. Beginning in February, the 2014 Winter Olympics are to take place in Sochi, Russia, from the 7th – 23rd of the month. The 22nd Winter Olympics, the games will see 98 events in 15 winter sports take place, with additional events held in the nearby resort town of Krasnaya Polyana. Selected as the host country in 2007, the games mark the first time that Russia has played host to the Winter Olympics since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Budget-savvy holidaymakers could take advantage of both events, as the run-up to the February event in Russia should see plenty of late deals emerging, and holiday operators are taking advanced bookings to Brazil for summer 2014. So whether you prefer a kickabout in hot climes or some sophisticated snow sports, there’s never been a better time to get in some sporting travel.
