Route 66 is the route taken by many different people to the west. It is the ideal route for those travelers who want to another way of traveling and discover the most charming places in the United States. Route 66 runs through eight U.S. states: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California. These are some of the stops that you should not skip any way.

1. Chicago

Many argue that Lou Mitchell ‘s Restaurant is the best breakfast restaurant in the city of Chicago. Opened in 1923 by the grandfather of the current owner, this restaurant became part of the Route 66 Hall of Fame on June 8, 2002. Since its opening it has never stopped receiving new customers, and its fresh eggs and buns are believed to have inspired the idea for the center hole of the famous donuts. Women are at the entrance  hold a small box with a chocolate cream milk  sweets called “Milk duds”. Every day 1,200 diners eat at Lou Mitchell ‘s Restaurant.

2. Springfield

Everyone knows about Springfield, since it’s been revealed as the town of the finctional characters “The Simpsons“. It is also known due to the charismatic Bruce Springfield and President Abraham Lincoln, who decided to spend his last years in this city. The Colossus of Springfield was built by Carl Rinnnus to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the coming to power of the politician. But there are many more along Route 66: giants that recall famous people, huge Ketsup bottles, huge chairs, all  of these with the sole purpose of drawing the attention of passersby.

3. Amarillo

When tourists come to Amarillo they know very well what they have to visit. Yes, we all want to see 12 models of Cadillacs that were dug in the ground between 1949 and 1964 and have been  painted on several occasions by various artists. But Amarillo has also other attractions that will surprise you. Here is a restaurant, Big Texan Steakrach, which encourages customers to eat in an hour a huge piece of meat almost two kilos. Those entering the challenge and do not achieve it must pay $ 76.

4. Meteor Crater Enterprises

Many experts have concluded that this huge surface, 1.2 km in diameter and 570 meters deep, situated four miles from I -40, was caused by a meteorite landing over 50,000 years. The meteorite was part of an asteroid which disintegrated almost completely in contact with the atmosphere of the earth. NASA trained the APOLLO program astronauts between 1964 and 1972 in this crater.
