Notes for your first trip to Malta

Malta is a destination that some of my best friends have had the opportunity to visit and I recognize that I still have it pending in my traveler schedule. Until now I only knew little about Malta other than that it is a popular destination to go and that it is one of the best places to go diving. But during the recent presentation of Malta Travel Guide Collection I participated in a very interesting gathering in which travel writers who already know Maltese have shared their travel experiences in that country.

I guess you know that Malta is a tourist destination in recent years that has been quite popular because this small Mediterranean country usually receives about 65.000 tourists annually. But above all, Malta is visited by British tourists and is a regular scale on most cruises of the Mediterranean area. In summer it is a destination of sun and sea where there are many small coves ideal for various water sports such as diving. It is a striking landmark for the great clean beaches where you can dive among real shipwrecks. During the gathering it is highlighted how friendly and welcoming its people are, characteristic of a destination of the Mediterranean. This character is also shown in Mediterranean cuisine with abundant fresh seafood and dishes made with pasta where the national dish is rabbit.

But Malta is, above all, an island where you find important reminders of the many historical events that have happened in it. As said in the gathering the capital, Valletta, holds great historical treasures including the one we advertised as imposing cathedral of San Juan with a richly decorated baroque interior golden hued and where you can see the Beheading of John the Baptist considered the masterpiece of Caravaggio. Other historical places that are highlighted in the guide are the megalithic temples of Hagar Quim and Mnajdra south of the island and the jewel in the crown of Maltese architecture, the walled city of Mdina where is the other cathedral of Malta. According to participants in the gathering Malta is an island where it is advisable to rent a car during your visit making it an ideal destination for a holiday of Easter.
