France | Najac is one of the prettiest villages in Aveyron

I advance that Najac is one of the prettiest towns I’ve visited in recent years which I discovered on my recent trip to southern France. Situated in the department of Aveyron in the Midi-Pyrenees region, Najac has an almost unbelievable location. Against a backdrop of wooded hills with lush green landscapes, Najac is situated high on a rocky promontory created by a meander of the river Aveyron. At the end of the promontory in an impregnable site are the ruins of the castle of Najac whose origins date back to 1100. From there, on the ledge of the hill down a single street is the location of the medieval town which leads you to the main square, Plaza del Barry of the fifteenth century with its characteristic arcades.

Najac Castle is a sample of military architecture of the time and when you visit and climb on top of round tower you’ll see some great panoramic views of the town of Najac. At the foot of the Castle you will see the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Southern Gothic style built in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. With a single nave it has a vault of the fourteenth century. Najac also had another church of the twelfth century but it was destroyed in 1850. When you get to Najac from the aforementioned main square you take a stroll around the only street of the village and as you progress through the steepest sections of it you will go looking at houses with greater seniority. On this tour you will see the Fountain of the Consuls of 1314 that forms with twelve sides and also a prominent building as the former Governor’s House.

The crafts also have a major role in Najac. Thus, in the square where Barry got a pastry was made the fouace, medieval scone that tastes very similar to our traditional Kings’ cake. Besides ceramic crafts, be sure to enter the knives craft store which are made following the medieval tradition. Here are more photos of Najac in Aveyron. southern France.
