Five essential beaches of Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura could easily be described as a piece of desert floating in the Atlantic Ocean. Maybe it’s an exaggeration, but of all the islands of the Canary archipelago it is the desert, partly thanks to the proximity to the African Sahara desert. Besides this peculiarity, it has also been appropriately titled as the “island resort”, because of its large number of beaches, which are among the best in Europe and offers a number of beaches that seem to have been drawn from another world, becoming a natural holiday destination. The following are, in our opinion, the best beaches of Fuerteventura.

Cofete

The right place to get lost and away from civilization is Cofete beach in Fuerteventura. Located south of the island, on the peninsula of Jandia, this unspoilt beach that is 12 km long, is behind the towering mountain massif of Jandia, which makes a pleasant contrast to the fine golden sand that covers the entire beach. Its greatest disadvantage is that it’s quite remote and access may be complicated by the nature of the route, so it is a special place. It is ideal to visit on a 4×4 vehicle.

Corralejo

In the north of the island, and forming part of the Dunes of Corralejo, is a set of seven beaches indicated especially for those who enjoy water sports such as windsurfing. Among the most popular are Medano, Bass Black and El Viejo. There you will find everything from beaches with all the amenities, to more secluded coves.

Sotavento

One of the most famous of Fuerteventura, also known as the beach-lake, Sotavento is over 9 km long and found a little away from hotels which usually do not have too great an influx, although there are always fans windsurfing and kiteboarding, visiting Sotavento to take advantage of the excellent natural conditions for the sport’s practice. A sand barrier that is between 100 and 300 meters from the shore creates a shallow lagoon, which together with the strong wind makes it a paradise for these sports.

Puertito de Lobos

More than a beach, it is a very quiet cove of crystalline waters, white sand and deep blue sky. Located on the island of Lobos, it can be reached by taking a boat in Corralejo. It is surrounded by fishermen’s houses where you can eat with breathtaking views and is a favorite destination for diving schools.

Costa Calma

One of the main tourist areas of the island, Costa Calma is equipped with modern amenities for visitors and has numerous hotels around at the beach. More than two kilometers long describes how its whitest beach are formed with palm trees and clear water. There are also numerous bars where you can eat.
