Family fun in Egypt’s Red Sea resorts

Sharm el Sheik is one of the few places where the best of both worlds can be had. On one side you have the coast surrounding the Red Sea, with long stretches of sand awaiting your bare toes. On the other side there’s the Sinai desert where all manner of excursions await. Combine that with the dry, temperate climate and the stunning ocean, and holidays to Sharm el Sheik may just satisfy everyone in the family. Here are a few suggestions on what to do on your Egyptian family adventure

For the young ones

Calm, clear water along with an abundance of tropical fish and aquatic creatures make Sharm el Sheik the perfect opportunity to introduce your kids to the world of snorkelling. Children of all ages will enjoy seeing the shimmering shoals swim by, and for the more adventurous, you can take a boat out to Tiran Island, where dolphins and reef sharks abound.

A little bit older

If you’ve got daredevils in tow, and don’t mind them getting behind the wheel then take a quad out into the desert. These 4 wheelers can take up to two people, and you have your choice of either a 2 hour tour, or a full day trip. The full day trip, while more expensive, is worth the money. The tour usually includes a stop at a snorkelling spot away from the masses, followed by a lunch in a Bedouin tent. If you’d rather let someone else take the reins, 4×4 safaris are easily arranged.

For everybody

Prefer to let your vacation wash over you and relax? Then take the kids on a glass bottom tour around the Red Sea. You’ll gaze in wonder at the vast array of colours that you see below you. Watch the coral and the bright fish long enough and it begins to look like one big organism, moving methodically along with the ocean.

For the Romantics

No family vacation would be complete without a short break from the family, so take advantage of the resort’s childminding facilities and go on a private dinner tour. A guide will take you into the desert for an authentic Bedouin dinner, and you can team this with a dusk-lit camel ride if you wish. Sweet nothings are always better whispered under the desert stars.

The best part of all of this is all these attractions can be scheduled from the comfort of your hotel. No need to even wander into the city for meet up points: at most resorts, a guide will come and meet you at the doorstep. From desert thrills to watery playgrounds, the resorts  of Egypt’s Red Sea region cater perfectly for the entire family.
