Czech Castles | Visiting the Karlstejn medieval castle near Prague

One of the typical tours you can do if you’re traveling to Prague and have planned several days of stay, is Karlstejn Castle. This medieval castle is located 32 kilometers southwest of Prague a little over half an hour by car. But the village of Karlstejn can also be reached by train. Karlstejn Castle was built in 1348 by the order of the Emperor Charles IV. Later the castle had several reconstructions. In 1485, it was rebuilt in Gothic style and later in Renaissance style in the late sixteenth century.

Karstejn Castle near Prague, was of great importance in the history of the Czech Republic and for over 200 years was used to keep the Crown Jewels. Located in a spectacular setting high on the hill above the village of Karkstejn, to reach the castle you need to walk for half an hour. There are two different tours to visit Karlstejn Castle. Visiting hours for Karlstejn Castle vary depending on the time of year always starting at 9 am and ending on the last tour beginning from 15 hours in winter to 18 hours in summer daily except for Monday. There is the possibility of two different tours to visit Karlstejn Castle. The simplest with foreign language guide lasts between 50 and 60 minutes and the price of tickets for adults are 270 CZK which equals 10.60 euros plus additional 20 CZK for the booking.

From June to October there is the possibility of another totally different tour which lasts just under two hours and includes the visit to the Chapel of the Holy Cross. For the tour to Karlstejn Castle II you must book in advance as it is limited to 15 people per hour. The price is 300 CZK which equals to 11.80 euros plus an additional 30 CZK for the booking. To go by train to Karkstejn Castle you need to catch it in Prague’s Smichov station and the trip takes about three quarters of an hour.
